Personality:

Machina's early life was marked by traumatic events, something that played a huge role in shaping his personality. He was forced to live through the horrors of living on the border during conflict, and entrusted with the care of his childhood best friend, Rem, by his mother in her last act. This left an impression on Machina, who fears losing people more than anything else. He is driven by his fear, letting it ride him. Because of this fear, Machina is very prone to making stupid mistakes and is easily manipulated into doing things that he ordinarily would not do, such as spying on his classmates.

While his fear tends to run the show, Machina does not tend to show his fear overtly. Instead, he tends to attempt to drive others off by being snappish, moody, and aloof. When not in an active battlefield, Machina will still make threats that are all bark and no bite.

Machina is also incredibly temperamental and broody. It's not hard to tell what he's brooding about if anything touches his temper. If anything, he's perhaps too transparent with his anger. While not completely ruled by his temper, it does get the better of him and lead him to making Poor Life Choices, such as charging a dragon that easily flattened him.

While Machina tends to be emotionally very dramatic, he is usually restrained in his displays of emotions until they reach a certain threshhold. While some of this may be modeling mechanics, even in cutscenes it is pretty apparent. However, when he is in an incredibly heightened emotional state (as in, furious, grieving for his friends, or shocked) he tends to go to the opposite extreme. In short, odds are very good someone might not read his emotional state from his face and body language until he explodes in one way or another.

Machina is rather slow to warm to new people, holding them at arm's length, emotionally. However, when he does open up to people he has an almost single-minded loyalty to them and will do almost anything to protect or help them, even if his idea of what would help them is sometimes skewed, such as getting trampled by an angry dragon because it attacked his childhood best friend.

This protectiveness can border on almost single-minded obsession at times, with Machina frequently making comments about wanting to protect Rem over the course of a relatively short period of time. He will undertake tasks he finds otherwise distasteful or otherwise would not do, for the sake of protecting those he has decided to care about.

Even when being manipulated by using his loyalty to others or his fears, Machina is an incredibly principled young man who has very little fear of authority. He will not quail at pointing out that someone is playing political games of little value while soldiers are actively getting killed in battlefields. He's also a terrible liar.

Underneath that is someone who has a very large soft spot for animals, and tends to be rather emotional and... squishy. His naming of animals (especially chocobos) is touched on lightly in the game, with his fondness for giving small animals odd names coming up more in extended canon. It took a good amount of political games-playing to get Machina going angry and antagonistic towards the rest of Class Zero (minus Rem). Later in the game, it's shown that Machina did have some care for the rest of the Class Zero cadets, as evidenced by how dramatically he broke down upon seeing the corpses of the cadets.

While he does not display a great deal of bookish intelligence, Machina was at the top of his class in academics before he was transferred to Class Zero. In addition, he seems to have a natural ability to lead others, as evidenced by his status as king after the end of the game.
